Can I Get a Job This Summer? As a college student are you worried about finding a summer job this year? The job market is certainly more competitive. Even some seasoned professionals are taking whatever they can find, and they may even be in competition with you. Yet, there is good news. Employers often prefer to hire young people for seasonal jobs. Not only that, but many businesses experience their busy season during the summer, so while they may not have been hiring over the winter, they will look to increase their staff in the summer. There are also many programs around the country aimed at putting 16 to 24 year olds to work. The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act stimulus money has given many areas the opportunity to fund youth job programs. As a college student, you may be interested in finding a job that will relate to your intended career, and niche job sites can help you do that. Whatever you do, you should begin your search as soon as possible. Don't wait until the semester ends.
Network, Get Your Resume Ready, and Look the Part Whether you are in college or out in the workforce, it is always important to network. Make your search for a job well-known to family and friends. Post your resume on online job boards. Ask for advice on your resume. While your resume will be limited if you are still in college, you still have accomplishments to list and a well-developed resume will show employers that you are serious about getting a job. Even if you are applying for a seasonal job, it is important for employers to know they are hiring someone who will take their job seriously and be dependable. Your cover letter, resume, and interviewing skills should show you are employable, but also make sure you look employable. It is perfectly fine to traipse through campus in your sweat pants or PJs, but when you are seeking a job, make sure you dress like you want the job.
Yes, They are Hiring -- But Will They Hire You? If you keep these things in mind and get started right away, you should be able to find employment this summer, despite a tight job market. While the pace has slowed, businesses are hiring, but remember, they have more talent than ever to choose from. Put your best foot forward and they're likely to hire you!
